About us

Help Ghana supports projects in the field of education and health care, or income-generating initiatives which help groups become self-supporting. We mainly focus on women's groups, because women in Ghana take care of the children. A project must be supported by the local community. They must also contribute in the form of labour, land and/or raw materials. Help Ghana only supports small projects (up to a maximum of € 2,000) and strives for full feedback on the progress of the project from the local organization. When an application is submitted to Help Ghana, the board checks whether the project meets the criteria. Subsequently, the applicants are sent a questionnaire with questions about the purpose, size, own contribution, co-financiers, references from government agencies, and a detailed budget. For infrastructure, a construction drawing with specified specifications must also be submitted. Our local contact person then visits the project to assess the application. Based on this information, the board decides whether a project can be supported. Our Ghanaian contact person discusses planning and responsibilities with the local organization in advance, after which a cooperation agreement is signed. During the implementation, our contact person keeps in contact with the project leaders to discuss progress and possible bottlenecks. In addition, there is a midterm and final report from both the project leaders and our contact person, which are discussed in the board meeting.

Purpose and Processing

The Help Ghana Foundation (since 1983) supports projects in the field of education and health care and projects that help groups to support themselves. In those 'income generating projects' we mainly focus on women's groups, because women in Ghana are responsible for the children. A project must be supported by the community for which it is intended. That community itself will also have to contribute in the form of labour, land and/or raw materials. Help Ghana only supports small projects and strives for full feedback on the progress of the project from the local organization.
Processing
When an application is submitted to Help Ghana Foundation, the board checks whether the project meets the criteria. If so, applicants will receive a project questionnaire sent with questions about the project; resp. size, own contribution, co-financiers, references from government agencies, churches, etc. Furthermore, a detailed budget and, if applicable, a construction drawing with specified specifications must be submitted. Our local contact person also visits the project. When the questionnaire is returned, the board will decide, partly on the basis of the information from our contact person, whether the project can be supported.
Process Monitoring
Before the start of a project, our Ghanaian contact person discusses the planning and responsibilities with the local organization, and a cooperation agreement is signed. During the implementation, our contact person visits the project to discuss progress and possible bottlenecks. In addition, there is a bimonthly report from both the project leaders and our contact person, which is discussed in the board meeting.
Results
The Help Ghana Foundation does not have a CBF quality mark. We think the costs of this are too high for a small foundation like ours. We prefer to use all donations to benefit the projects. However, we do have official ANBI status (Algemeen Nut Beogende Instelling) for the tax authorities. We can send you a spending report on request.

The Board

The board meets approximately every six weeks at the home of one of the board members. Because the board members pay for their travel and other costs themselves, it is possible to have 95% of the collected funds go to the projects. We use Ghanaian contacts and advisors including Emmanuel Kwesi Nkrumah, Jackson Oppon-Nimoh in Haarlem, Kingsley Kwame Safo and Kwaku Amoah Maxwell in Accra, whom we have all known for over fifteen years.
